Leek - Cornhill Develpoment Report
North Staffordshire Green Party volunteers have run a small research campaign in Leek town.
The NSGP is concerned about planned developments in the
Cornhill area of Leek. The area is about a mile outside the town centre – for
those of you who are familiar with Leek Cornhill is near the cattle market.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council wants to build office suites, a hotel,
p
ossibly a conference
centre
and other facilities on the site. They claim that this will help improve the local economy. We in the NSGP are against this as feel that there are plenty of derelict and or unused buildings in Leek town centre that could be converted into offices etc. Some would even be big enough to be converted to a hotel.
Our argument is that reusing these town centre buildings ( see Talbot Pub) will help invigorate the local economy as they will bring more office workers and hotel customers into the town. We also predict that an out of town hotel is more likely to be occupied by a hotel chain – these chains are less likely to use local suppliers for maintenance and other services, also they have a tendency to employ a non-local workforce.
We studied the council’s plans and researched documented accounts of similar projects – these provided evidence for our assertion that the plan will not benefit the local economy as much as claimed.
